How Does it Work

The process starts with ovarian stimulation to encourage the production of multiple eggs. Then, eggs are retrieved, and the woman's partner's sperm (or donor sperm) is used to fertilize the eggs in a lab. The fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are cultured for a few days before being transferred to the uterus.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment where an egg is fertilized by sperm outside of the body, in a lab, and then transferred to the uterus. This process, also known as assisted reproductive technology (ART), is used to help couples or individuals who are having difficulty conceiving.

Why it is Used

IVF is typically used to assist with fertilization when other treatments haven't been successful, or when there are specific fertility issues, such as male factor infertility or problems with egg quality.

What are the steps involved in an IVF cycle?

A typical IVF cycle generally involves

Ovarian Stimulation: Medications are given to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs.
Egg Retrieval: A minor surgical procedure, usually under anesthesia, where eggs are retrieved from the ovaries using a needle guided by ultrasound.
Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are combined with sperm in the lab. This can be conventional IVF (eggs and sperm are mixed) or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), where a single sperm is injected directly into each egg.
Embryo Development: The fertilized eggs (embryos) are monitored for several days as they develop.
Embryo Transfer: The best quality embryo(s) are transferred into the woman's uterus.
Pregnancy Test: A blood test is done about 9-14 days after embryo transfer to check for pregnancy.
